KINGSTON (WATE) -- Something else is soaring along with gas prices, the sale of scooters. And one Kingston couple says riding their scooter is more economical than ever.
Some dealers are reporting they're nearly out of their normal inventory, as people look to save a few bucks.
Vickey and Mike Beard have owned their 2000 Honda Helix for several years.
When they bought it, it was more for recreation. But recently, thanks to soaring gas prices, they're driving it more than ever.
"I would say we are saving $150-200 a week because that's how much it costs to fill up our car," Vickey says.
The Beards commute to work from Kingston. Rather than driving both cars into West knoxville each day, they haul in their scooter, giving them the freedom they need without breaking the bank.
"I am still amazed about the gas prices. I put $7.00 worth of gas in this scooter, but that's better than having put in a second credit card when trying to fill up you car up," Mike says.
Their car is normally parked at the farragut "YMCA" where Vickey works. Then Mike takes the scooter to his job.
The couple has also been using it lately for everyday errands and even to go to church.
"People stare at us every now and again, especially Mike when he goes to grocery store," Vickey says.
The Beards say they paid $3,800 for their scooter which is turning out to be quite the bargain.
In fact depending on the make, scooters typically range from around $1,500 to $10,000.
Many get above 60 miles per hour, meaning they can be used on highways.
And most scooters get more than 50 miles per gallon. Some even claim to get as high as 100 miles a gallon.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, scooter sales have jumped 200 percent this year nationwide and that number is expected to go up even more.
