(WATE) - Rushing a child to the emergency room is scary for any parent. Things can get even tenser when a doctor starts ordering tests to find out the seriousness of the injury or the illness.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, even whether a specific test is necessary.
If a blood test is ordered, ask what the test will tell you, said Dr. Ryan Redman, ER director at Children's Hospital. A complete blood count measures levels of different types of blood cells. It can help to detect a wide variety of illnesses or signs of infections.
Urine tests show the presence of a urinary tract infection, indicates how the kidney is functioning or the presence of diabetes.
Other than broken bones, Redman says x-rays can show the presence of lung infections.
