East Tennessee companies go red for American Heart Month

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - Many organizations and businesses are going red for American Heart Month. 

The month brings awareness for heart disease being a leading cause of death for many groups.

Around 610,000 people die of heart disease each year in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the No.1 killer of women. Also, congenital heart defects affect around 40,000 babies born in the country.

Wear Red Day Proclamation

The event will be held at The Women's Pavilion Lobby at Tennova Turkey Creek Friday at 8:30 a.m. 

National Wear Red Day

Businesses across the area will be wearing red. Supporters can share photos on social media and use the hashtag #KnoxGoRed. 

Little Hats, Big Hearts Campaign

Area hospitals will be giving newborns red knitted hats to raise awareness. 

Jewelry TV

JTV will collect donations from customers via photo and online. All of the funds will go to Go Red For Women

Knoxville Heart Ball

The event will be Feb. 17 from 6 p.m. to midnight at The Mill and Mine.
