1 dead, 3 injured in crash on I-40 in Cocke County

NEWPORT, Tenn. (WATE) - One person was killed and three others injured in a crash involving six vehicles Monday morning on Interstate 40 in Cocke County.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says a 2008 Ford Explorer driven by Franklin Moore, 33, was going west around mile marker 430 when it hit a guard rail, spun and came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Moore's vehicle was then hit by a 2000 Dodge Ram driven by Bernice Warren, 71, which continued on and came to a stop on the right shoulder.

A Dodge Neon driven by Tip Ellison swerved to avoid the accident, hitting a tractor trailer driven by Ricky Gibson, 27. The Neon spun and hit the concrete barrier on the left side of the road. The tractor trailer stopped on the right shoulder.

Another tractor trailer, driven by Sammy Wells, 61, hit Moore's Ford Explorer, went to the right and overturned down an embankment. Ford's vehicle spun, hit the guard rail and was hit by a Honda Civic driven by Jeremy McNealy, 22.

Moore, the driver of the initial vehicle involved in the crash, was killed. Warren, Ellison and Wells were injured in the crash. Gibson and McNealy were not hurt.

The westbound lanes were closed for several hours and traffic detoured.
