Dozens of students turn out in support of ex-Union County teacher, LGBT club sponsor

WATE 6 On Your Side Staff - MAYNARDVILLE (WATE) - Dozens of students came out Thursday night to show their support for a Union County High School teacher who says he was let go after sponsoring an LGBT club.

Chris Richeson sponsored the Gay Straight Alliance and found out recently he wasn't rehired for the upcoming school year. Students showed up to Thursday night's school board meeting with signs and posters, showing their support for their former teacher.

Richeson also spoke at the meeting saying his goal was to make sure the club had a sponsor for next year.

"They need someone who can be an advocate," he said. "I felt like I could actually be their shield against those who might harass them while working to build bridges to make a community that on the whole is more accepting and more understanding of different people."

A few students also stepped up to the microphone in Richeson's defense. The school board said they would make sure the club goes on next year, but so far, no faculty members have stepped up to sponsor it. Richeson's personnel file showed no problems and his evaluations all show good scores. The school board still has not responded to questions about the reason for Richeson's non-renewal.
