Driver pulled from burning car after crashing into multiple vehicles on Pellissippi Parkway

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - A driver is recovering in the hospital after crashing into multiple vehicles and catching fire Monday morning on Pellissippi Parkway.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office says a Lexus ES300 was going westbound near the intersection with Oak Ridge Highway around 11:45 a.m. when it hit a Toyota Camry in the rear. No one in the Camry was seriously hurt.

The driver of the Lexus was seen slumped over the wheel, but a few minutes later, the driver woke up, kept going westbound, made a U-turn and then started going eastbound.

The driver was seen driving erratically on the median and shoulder before hitting two more vehicles. The Lexus then kept going eastbound.

The Lexus finally rear-ended a black Audi at Lovell Road, veered into the median and caught fire. Other drivers pulled the driver of the Lexus from the burning vehicle.

The driver was taken to Parkwest Medical Center and then to UT Medical Center.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office is still investigating.

Both southbound lanes and one lane of northbound Pellissippi Parkway were closed but have since reopened.

Two officers on their way to the scene were also involved in an accident, although no one was injured.
