Gold's Gym at Knoxville Center Mall set to close

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - Gold's Gym at Knoxville Center Mall will close its doors on May 16, according to a gym manager. The manager said the decision to close was not made at the local level.

There are three other Gold's Gym locations in Knoxville - two on Kingston Pike, one on Chapman Highway, as well as one in Oak Ridge and another in Alcoa.

The gym chain, which was founded in Venice Beach, California, in 1965, has more than 700 locations across the United States.

Knoxville Partners LLC, the owner of Knoxville Center Mall, has not yet responded to a request to find out what their plans are for the location.

Several storefronts are closed at Knoxville Center Mall. Some have a poster up with a phone number for leasing information. There are some larger tenants still at the shopping center, like Sears and Belk. Visitors said it is not the bustling hang out spot it used to be.

"Most of the mall is consolidated to the center with a few stores remaining around the food court," said Ron O'Connor.

Sci-Fi City left Knoxville Center Mall and opened a new location in Fountain City. The manager of the store said they are getting more traffic at the new spot.

"There were a bunch of promises and there was nothing that came from that, so you know, did they just forget?" said manager Walter Ricketts.
