Hawkins Co. scam claiming failed court appearance

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - The Hawkins County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam. 

The scam involves a suspect calling residents and telling them they failed to appear in criminal court or for a grand jury session. 

The caller proceeds to tell residents they will not be arrested if they pay $500. The suspect identifies himself as Lt. Allen, according to the sheriff's office. 

The sheriff says this is a scam. Residents will be notified through a warrant or capias that is issued for an arrest and not by phone.
