IHOP offers free pancakes to benefit East Tenn. Children's Hospital

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - IHOP restaurants in East Tennessee were doing what they do best Tuesday with some extra helping hands making short stacks going for a good cause.

"National Pancake Day is one of my favorite days of the year, first of all because IHOP gives away free short stacks of pancakes (who wouldn't want that!), but they also ask people to make a donation to Children's Hospital," said Erica Estep with East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

Every dollar donated goes straight to East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

Some of their patient ambassadors were on hand to say thanks.

Madeline Guerra and Bryan Cody each spending a lot of time in the hospital.

"Soon after her birth we found out she had Turner syndrome. Within a few weeks she was admitted," explained Danielle Guerra, Madeline's mother.

Trista Cody said her son was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia at his newborn screening. "From there we were referred to the hematology/oncology clinic," she said.

Tuesday each of them helped share the importance of funding the not-for-profit hospital and what the hospital staff does for them.

"To get my mind off the pain they give me legos," Bryan said.

Madeline added, "When you go some place a lot you want them to be like your second family, not the people you dread."

The process to help out is pretty simple. You just visit any participating location and order a free short stack of pancakes, then make your donation and all the money goes to ETCH.

"Each year the money is spent on the most needed equipment at the hospital and it really depends on how much is given to how much we can get, so we really rely on the people of East Tennessee and their generosity," Estep said.

A lot of good can be done for children in need by simply eating breakfast.

"Thank you to all the people who donate today because it's really kind of you, and I don't think some people realize how much every little bit really does help," Madeline said.
