Accident happened near mile marker 431on I-40E.

WATE 6 On Your Side staff - NEWPORT (WATE) - A two-month old baby boy was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center by helicopter after he was ejected through the left rear window of a car.

Tennessee Department of Transportation said Brittany Rankin, 19, from Morristown was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer around a curve on Interstate 40 near mile marker 431, when she veered off the shoulder, overcorrecting and hitting a cable barrier.

TDOT said the SUV rolled over, ejecting the infant from its rear facing car seat. Investigators said the car seat was buckled in, but the infant was not buckled into his harness.

Both adults in the front seat were wearing seatbelts, according to TDOT, and suffered no injuries.

Eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 were closed while the crash was investigated, but has since reopened.
