Neighbor surprised by man fatally stabbing roommate on Sevier Avenue

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville man was charged with first-degree murder after his roommates body was found Friday afternoon on their living room floor in a home on Sevier Avenue.

Steven Simpson, 45, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Officers responded to a deceased body call at a home located on the 2300 block of Sevier Avenue.

According to reports, the resident said he returned home to find his roommate deceased.

During examination of the body, the medical examiner and investigators discovered stab wounds on the victim, later identified as William Innes, 50.

Evidence gathered on the scene led investigators to a possible suspect, Simpson.

Simpson was located in the parking lot of a West Knoxville business by KPD officers. He was taken into custody without incident.

Gerald Hogan lives off of Sevier Avenue. He says it is unsettling that this happened so close to his home.

"I'm always sitting out here, ya know, and they might want to take it out on somebody else instead of their housemate," said Hogan.

Hogan says he only ever saw the the Innes and Simpson a couple of times.

"It just took me by surprise," said Hogan. "They had just moved in there. They're redoing all those houses right there in that area and I think that was the first one they finished with."

After being interviewed by investigators, Simpson was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of especially aggravated robbery. He is being held in the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $150,000 bond.
