Caught on camera: Raccoon knocks out power to thousands in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - While many were fast asleep when the lights went out in West Knoxville on Thursday morning, 40,000 people lost power after a raccoon entered a Knoxville Utility substation.

The outage occurred around 4:30 a.m. this morning. While many had their power restored rather quickly, about eight thousand were without power an hour later. Knoxville Utility Board eventually restored power to all customers around 6:30 a.m.

KUB tweeted a video of the moment the power outage occurred.

No details on how the raccoon was able to disrupt power at the West Hills substation. We will continue to update the story as more details become available.
