WATE 6 On Your Side staff - KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The University of Tennessee-Knoxville has named Beverly J. Davenport to replace Chancellor Jimmy Cheek.
The university named Davenport on Monday afternoon. She, Alexander Cartwright and Pamela Whitten were all selected as finalists for the position.
Davenport will join the university on March 1, pending board approval. She is currently interim president at the University of Cincinnati. She previously served as their senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. Davenport is an accomplished scholar who has authored more than 100 papers and published three books on quality of worklife issues and workplace civility.
"During a comprehensive national search, Dr. Davenport rose to the top of the candidate pool because of her extensive experience and qualifications. She will be an excellent fit as the next leader of UT Knoxville," UT President Joe DiPietro said. "I'm confident the flagship campus will continue its ascent as a top public research institution under her leadership."
Cheek announced he would step down from his position and return to the faculty in June 2016. He has served as chancellor since 2009.
