Nearly 700 pounds of marijuana destroyed after removal from illegal grow in Colorado

KXRM staff - FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. (KXRM) — Nearly 700 pounds of marijuana from an illegal grow in Penrose was removed and destroyed Tuesday, October 11.

According to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, family members who lived out of state inherited the property in Penrose after the original owner passed away.

The family had been in contact with authorities to find out what they needed to do to legally maintain the grow.

Deputies say they worked with the family for weeks but since the family had an out of state status – which prevented them from having a caretaker's license – and the grow itself was visible from the road with too many plants, it was out of compliance. The family relinquished all plants to the Sheriff's Office.

The plants were removed and taken to a burn pit where all of the plants were destroyed.

There will be no criminal charges filed in this case.
