KNOXVILLE (WATE) - More than 1,000 people were in a attendance Saturday for a special Mass dedication at The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Many leaders of the Catholic Church representing the Vatican attended the historic celebration and Rite of Dedication.
The Mass marks the official opening of the Diocese of Knoxville's first dedicated cathedral and will replace the current Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Sacred Heart Cathedral served as a parish since 1956 until Pope St. John Paul II established the Diocese of Knoxville in 1988 and elevated Sacred Heart to a cathedral.
The old cathedral building will be converted into a parish fellowship hall.
