Tennessee falls to Maryland 4-0 in Vitello's debut

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - Tony Vitello's head coaching debut did not go as planned. After a 3-hour weather delay, the Vols struck out 11 times as Maryland shut down Tennessee 4-0 in the home opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Friday.

The Vols were no match for Maryland starting pitcher Taylor Bloom. The senior tossed nine strikeouts in seven innings, using only 97 pitches to run through Tennessee's lineup.

Maryland got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning before adding a cushion with runs in the eighth and ninth frames. Preseason All-American Nick Dunn powered the Terrapins with a pair of solo home runs.

Tennessee and Maryland return to the diamond Saturday at 7 p.m.. ET before wrapping up the series Sunday at 1.
