KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - Not since Bruce Pearl stood by the bench had the Vols played a game as a ranked team. That changed Saturday, when 24th ranked Tennessee (7-1) stayed a step ahead of Lipscomb (6-4) in their 81-71 win against the Bisons.
It wasn't the prettiest game. Questionable officiating and so-so shooting led to a sluggish effort, but again Tennessee proved that they can beat good teams at less than their best. And if they do ever put it all together, look out.
Grant Williams led the team with 19 points and 8 rebounds, one of four Vols in double figures Saturday. Admiral Schofield added 13 points and 6 boards, James Daniel scored all 12 of his points on four 3-pointers, and Chris Darrington played his best game of the season with 11 points.
Tennessee held the Bisons under 40% shooting, and assisted on 22 of their 25 made baskets.
The Vols will have a week to prepare for defending national champion UNC. The 11th ranked Tarheels (9-1) edged Tennessee in Chapel Hill last year 73-71. Tennessee is planning for next weekend's game to be a Checker TBA event. To find your color, head to www.checkertba.com
