What about listening to WATE on your radio?

Many people remember receiving WATE's audio on 87.7 FM and have wondered what happened to that.

Regretfully, the radio frequency is no longer available because it is part of the analog signal that we were required to discontinue in 2009.

Congressional mandate, copyright laws and program licensing combine to prevent us from being able to provide our programming on a radio station, or even on the Internet.

WATE and other local broadcasters were required by Congress to end broadcasting programs on their analog channel by June 12, 2009.

Since then, WATE has not been allowed to broadcast on its former VHF channel assignment. We now broadcast only on digital channel 26, also known as 6.1 or 6-1.

If you are experiencing problems receiving our programs, information on this page should help you find and fix the problem.

Do you subscribe to cable or satellite TV?

If so, call your cable or satellite service provider. Cable and satellite providers should provide a signal you can receive, even if you don't own a digital TV.

Do you receive WATE by antenna?

If so, you MUST have a digital television or set-top converter to receive our signal.

Do you know if you need a set-top converter?

You will not need a converter if you receive WATE from a cable or satellite provider, or if you own a TV that was built after March 1, 2007. Otherwise, if you only have an older model analog TV, you will need a converter to continue receiving WATE and other digital TV broadcasts.

Do you have a digital TV or set-top converter and still have trouble receiving WATE?

Here are some tips that may help you receive our programming:

  • Make sure that you have a good-quality antenna that receives both VHF and UHF signals.
  • If you use an outside antenna, make sure it is pointed toward Knoxville.

  • Check all connections, as shown in the owner's manual for your converter or digital TV.

  • If you use a converter, make sure it is getting power and is turned on. Also make sure the TV connected to the converter is on either channel 3 or 4. Your owner's manual will tell you which channel to use.
  • Re-scan for channels on your converter or digital TV. Again, your owner's manual will show you how to do this.
  • If you still can't receive WATE, try manually punching in 26 on the remote for your converter or digital TV.

  • If you still can't receive our programming, you may contact us for help.
  • You may also get help by calling 1-800-CALL-FCC (1-800-225-5322) or using several online resources. Here are three:
