KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Crews made repairs to the Fulton High School football field Friday after a sinkhole that opened on the 40 yard line forced play to be suspended in the fourth quarter.

The hole looked small at first, only about a foot in diameter. However, a look inside revealed it was more than 12 feet deep.

6 News found out this isn't the first time a sinkhole has opened up on the field and it may not be the last.

"We've had some sinkholes before, but that's the first time we've ever had one appear in the middle of a football game," said Athletic Director Jody Wright.

He said Fulton's football coach was the first to see the ground give way. "He was standing fairly close to it and he saw it literally open up. We immediately stopped play right then."

School officials will check the field regularly for any signs of the sinkhole.

"I don't know that that's going to be the last sinkhole we have," Wright said. "That started out as a small depression this summer that we had filled in. We cut the sod back, filled it in, put the sod back and obviously, it turned into a major problem."

Crews expect to have full repairs to the field finished by next week. They don't have another varsity home game scheduled until October 9.
