Getting into UT about more than grades, scores

KNOXVILLE (AP) -- The application deadlines are fast approaching for admission to the University of Tennessee and officials say qualifications are about more than grades.

Vern Granger, who directs undergraduate admissions, told The Knoxville News Sentinel the belief that it takes an ACT score of 26 to get into UT as a freshman isn't true.

Granger said admitting the "best" students also means taking in those who demonstrate the ability to succeed at UT.

University officials said 57 percent of last year's applicants who scored less than 25 or had less than a 3.4 grade point average were accepted.

Nov. 1 is the deadline to apply if students want to be considered for competitive scholarships and the Chancellor's Honors Program.

The regular deadline to apply for admission next fall is Dec. 1.
