Sen. Corker says he feels 'strong connection' to Haiti

CHATTANOOGA (AP) -- The devastating earthquake in Haiti has struck an emotional chord with U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, who has said a mission trip to the country 25 years ago led him to public service.

The Tennessee Republican issued a statement about the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Tuesday near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, saying his thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti, their loved ones, and those aiding in the recovery efforts.

Corker's office is offering assistance to affected Tennesseans.

The former Chattanooga mayor said he has "felt a strong connection to Haiti" since he went there on a church mission trip 25 years ago.

Corker has said that observing the poverty and living conditions inspired him then to begin looking at housing needs in Chattanooga.
