KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- It looks as if Kevin Steele will not be coming to Tennessee after all.

Sources close to the situation have told WATE that a deal to become Derek Dooley's defensive coordinator at Tennessee was very close, but Steele's players at Clemson helped convince him to stay.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney confirmed through a school spokesperson Wednesday that Steele will remain Clemson's defensive coordinator.

Steele previously held the same position at Alabama under Nick Saban.

Steele played for Tennessee and was a member of Johnny Majors' 1978 and 1979 teams. He stayed on as a student assistant in 1980 and then a graduate assistant in 1981 before being promoted to outside linebackers' coach the next season.

Steele left Tennessee to coach New Mexico State, but returned in 1987 to coach defensive backs for two seasons.

Along with Saban, Steele has worked under such legendary coaches as Tom Osborne at Nebraska and Bobby Bowden at Florida State.
