CROSSVILLE (WATE) - The Cumberland County School Board has voted to cancel spring break in order to make up snow days.

Tuesday was the 17th snow day for the district.

Students will now be in class on April 5-9, making up five days. Students will also have a make up day of classes over the Good Friday holiday on April 2.

The board weighed a few options, but felt canceling spring break would allow as much instruction time as possible before students take TCAP tests, along with year end exams and Gateway exams.

"This is the first time in 15 years we've had to deal with a situation like this," says school board member Brian Houston.

He says high school graduation dates were also a concern.

"A lot of seniors have ordered invitations, a lot of people have planned to take off from other states, we really can't change that," Houston says.

Students like Tori Allred aren't happy about the plan. Her parents will have to cancel a family get together planned for the holiday.

"Yeah, it is pretty much a bummer," Allred says.

If schools are closed for one more day this year, the schedule for the last week of classes will be revised like this:

  • Schools would be in session on Wednesday, May 26.
  • Thursday, May 27 would be an administrative day without students.
  • Friday, May 28 will be the last day of school ending at 10:00.

If schools are closed for two more days, students would also have to attend classes on Thursday, May 27.
