ALCOA (WATE) - A Knoxville man who got out of his car after a wreck on Pellissippi Parkway was hit and killed by another car early Wednesday morning.

Daniel Akers, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash around 2:00 a.m. at the parkway's intersection with Topside Road.

Akers was driving a 2000 Dodge Viper eastbound on the parkway when it left the road and hit a concrete barrier. Alcoa police said Akers got out of his car and called a relative.

Kenneth W. Truss, of Louisville, was driving a 2007 Ford Mustang east on the parkway. He told police as he swerved to avoid Akers' wreck, he hit someone who stumbled into his path.

Truss and a passenger in his car weren't injured.

Akers and Truss were taken to Blount Memorial Hospital for toxicology screenings, which police said is standard in fatal accidents.

The investigation into the crash continues.
