Henley Bridge now closed for construction

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Henley Bridge connecting Downtown and South Knoxville is officially closed.

TDOT closed the bridge at 12:01 Monday morning.

"We're hoping that the majority of motorists have had the chance to at least try their detours," said TDOT spokesperson Yvette Martinez.

Martinez said they have been doing community outreach since January.

Crews spent much of Sunday evening installing curbs and getting detour signs in position to lead drivers away from the bridge.

The official detour for the construction project is James White Parkway to Moody Avenue and Chapman Highway.

"I am the great, great, great grandson of Colonel David Henley," said Luke Henley who drove to the bridge with his family an hour before the closure.

Henley said while he understands the project will be an inconvenience for drivers he said the reconstruction is necessary considering the age of the bridge.

He is also thankful crews are preserving its original look.

Business owners in South Knoxville had been concerned about the closure but more recently are trying to remain optimistic.

"We do have options for other locations that we may exercise if it's really bad, but we'll have to wait and see, " said Disc Exchange President Allan Miller.

The detour will be in place for the next two and a half years.
