KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Businesses in downtown Knoxville are starting to expand beyond Market Square.

The Daylight Building on Union Avenue, just two blocks from Market Square, has three new businesses opening in May.

Those businesses include Union Avenue Books, the consignment store Reruns and a small grocery store called Just Ripe.

Kristen Faerber, co-owner of Just Ripe, says it should be open in two weeks. She says there were several reasons why they decided to open their business there.

"The location of the Daylight Building worked really well for us because it was under renovation at a really good time, and meets the needs of our project," Faerber said.

She said not being directly in Market Square will not be a problem.

"A little bit off the beaten path is not a bad thing," she said. "Market Square is wonderful, but does tend to be very, very busy there and access could be a little bit of a problem with special events. People who are just wanting to buy some groceries probably don't want to fight through crowds."

The owner of Reruns has also decided to move from its current location in Market Square.

The building they are in is for sale and they wanted a more permanent location. They also feel moving to the Daylight Building will be good for business.

"There is a really good group of businesses there," said Brianna Lamberson, a sales associate for Reruns. "One of them being Just Ripe, which we are all excited about."

Lamberson says she is excited to see other parts of downtown grow. "I think this city has amazing potential. I get really excited when I walk around. I can't wait to see Knoxville expand. I think more businesses should come here."

People who live downtown say they cannot wait for these businesses to open.

"I think it's great," said Andrew Dill who lives in the Daylight Building. "I am looking forward to coming down on a rainy day like this and just getting a sandwich at the shop when it does open."

The Daylight Building already has two businesses in place: John Black Photography and The Happy Envelope.

People who work in the area say the building used to be an office space for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
