LUTTRELL (WATE) - A woman's body was found lying in the middle of a road Thursday night and now the Union County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case as a homicide.
Officers responded to a call about a shooting just before 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 370 and Little Bull Run Road in Luttrell.
A neighbor identified the woman as Lisa Young, 45, although the Union County Sheriff's Office has not officially released her identity.
Young lived in a small and secluded mobile home park community where it seems everyone knows each other.
"Lisa was a kind person. She was one of the good renters," said her landlord, Della Mae Wenger.
It was Wenger and several neighbors who saw Young's body lying on Little Bull Run Road, which is about half a mile from her home.
Wenger says Young was found face down. Her friends tried to do CPR on her, but they say she had no pulse.
"I touched her hand a little bit. I didn't hold her hand. I touched her and it was cold," Wenger said.
The man who initially found Young's body is a neighbor and friend. He says he saw her in a car with four other people. She was crying as she was being driven away so he knew something was wrong. He says he tried to follow that car, but it was too late.
The neighbor says he grabbed his keys and hopped in his car as fast as he could because he was worried, but he never expected to find Young shot to death.
"When you see death and you see something like that, it is really shocking," Wenger said.
Other witnesses say before Young's body was found they heard a loud argument near her home, but it's unclear if there's a connection.
Young was taken to UT Medical Center in Knoxville.
The sheriff's office says investigators are following up on some leads in this case.
Neighbors say Young lived on her own. She has a son in New Jersey who they say is expected to arrive in East Tennessee on Saturday to plan his mother's funeral.
The investigation is being conducted by the sheriff's office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Young has several drug convictions and other offenses in Knox County.
