SURGOINSVILLE (WATE) - A Hawkins County man and his step-son were arrested Monday after nearly 50 pounds of marijuana was discovered during an overnight drug bust.

Officials said the investigation began late on Sunday outside a home on Rose Lane and ended with the arrests of Jason Ray, 33, and John Skeens, 59, early Monday morning.

Deputies said they first saw Ray sitting in his car and smoking marijuana in the 100-block of Rose Lane.

Ray told deputies it was OK if they searched his home when they asked. He also told them he had additional marijuana and a small amount of crack cocaine inside his car.

Deputies then asked to search a mobile home on the property, but Ray told them it didn't belong to him. Ray told the deputies where to find the owner, Skeens, and they later found him at another nearby home.

Skeens also consented to a search and unlocked the door to the mobile home.

According to the deputies who first went inside, the odor of marijuana was extremely strong.

They said that in one of the bedrooms, deputies located a green box which contained two large bricks of marijuana. They were around twenty pounds each and wrapped in plastic.

Deputies also recovered numerous gallon-size bags full of marijuana along with several more sandwich-size plastic baggies. The total amount of marijuana confiscated from the mobile home was between 45 and 50 pounds.

Officials found out later that Skeens is Ray's step-father.

Both were arrested and taken to the Hawkins County Jail. They were each charged with several drug offenses.

Ray is currently free on a $10,000 bond. Skeens is still in the Hawkins County Jail under a $500,000 bond.
