Crowds fill Downtown Knoxville for Pridefest

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Big crowds headed to Downtown Knoxville on Saturday for the annual gay pride festival, following a historic vote legalizing gay marriage in New York state.

Knoxville's Pridefest Parade is held each year in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York.

Festival attendee Randy Bigler says Pridefest means even more after New York's historic vote.

"That was actually a big reason I decided to come; because I was kind of on the fence about whether or not I wanted to come and then I saw that and thought I would come out and meet some people," Bigler said. "Cause it does give the gay community hope that maybe one day here in Tennessee gay marriage will be legalized."

Organizers call Pridefest an open celebration of music, entertainment, and speakers focused on promoting equality and inclusion of all people.
