Man charged with murder in Knox Co. Ky. triple shooting

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knox County, Ky. man was arrested in Knoxville Thursday for the murder of a woman and assault of her sister.

Kentucky State Police troopers obtained an arrest warrant and Tennessee officers made the arrest of Gillis Smith, 68, who is recovering at the University of Tennessee Medical Center from a gunshot wound.

Smith is charged with murder, assault, and tampering with physical evidence.

Christine Engle, 46, was killed and Alice Taylor, 56, was wounded Monday during a fight at Gillis' home on Houston Broughton Road in the Flat Lick community.

After Smith is released from the hospital he will be held by Tennessee authorities until extradition is arranged.

Troopers say Engle was visiting Taylor and Smith, and the three were drinking heavily before the shooting took place.
