HARLAN, Ky. (WATE) - The examination of remains found Monday in the Blair community led Kentucky State Police to open a murder investigation.

The state medical examiner's office identified the victim as James Feltner. His age and hometown were not released.

State police did not release any details about Feltner's cause of death, but they say his remains were found in an abandoned strip mine.

Investigators are seeking information about a rifle that may be involved in Feltner's murder. It's an AR-15 type black rifle with a stainless steel barrel. It may be somewhere in the Cumberland area, according to the state police.

Investigators believe the rifle was likely sold, traded or disposed of after July 15.

Anyone with information about Feltner's death should call Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan at 606-573-3131.
