Church group help kids start school right

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - For the past few days, shoppers have been hitting the school supply sections at local retailers, hoping to stock up for the school year in a cost effective way. However, even with the deals of the tax free weekend, not everyone is able to purchase everything on the school shopping list.

That's where one local organization is stepping in, as crowds of people lined up Sunday for some much needed school supplies.

"We will have backpacks, probably through tomorrow and maybe the end of Tuesday. If you are in the Knox area and you need school supplies, call us and you can come by and get them," said Travis Ballinger of Freedom House Church of God.

Giving is nothing new to the members of Freedom House Church of God. We first met them back in May in Tuscaloosa. 6 News was there to document the devastation caused by a deadly tornado and the aid provided by Freedom House Church of God, donating supplies from Knoxville volunteers. Sunday was no different as people like Merry Rogers are grateful for the help.

"I am a grandmother so I try to help out as much as I can for my daughter. She works full time and you have to help. You have to help your family," said Rogers.

A total of 500 backpacks filled with pens, pencils, notebooks and other items will be distributed this week; Sunday at the church and Tuesday at Walter P. Taylor Homes, as well as Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries (KARM).

"There's so many people in need in Knoxville. School supplies are expensive. It costs a lot of money. You are getting clothes, haircuts. You're doing all these things, and this is just a small way we can help meet a need," said Ballinger.

"It's very difficult nowadays, with the economy, and you just have to stretch and make ends meet," said Rogers.

Freedom House Church of God is located on 132 Lovell Road Knoxville, TN 37934. Their main office number is 865-966-0455.
