Tellico Plains High School student stabbed on first day of school

TELLICO PLAINS (WATE) - Officials say a student was stabbed on the first day of school Monday at Tellico Plains High School before classes started.

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed with a knife in the upper arm and hand about 7:45 a.m.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the teen was chased through the gymnasium by a 16-year-old boy.

Several people witnessed the incident the gymnasium and the school resource officer responded.

The school nurse treated the injured student. Then he was taken by his father to an emergency room. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Officials say the assailant ran from the scene, but he stopped and dropped the knife when the resource officer ran after him. He was charged, taken to a juvenile facility and expelled from school.
