TAZEWELL (WATE) - Several law enforcement agencies responded after an inmate trustee found an IED (improvised explosive device) Wednesday while cleaning the Claiborne County Courthouse basement.

The Claiborne County Sheriff's Office, Claiborne County Office of Emergency Management Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Knox County Bomb Squad and the FBI all came to the scene.

The device appeared to be several years old, according to EMA Director David Breeding.

The ATF learned the IED was part of an investigation conducted in the early 1990s. It was kept in an evidence locker in the basement until the trustee found it.

The IED was taken to a remote location and safely detonated.
