Murfreesboro mosque construction delayed after bids lacking

MURFREESBORO (AP) - Leaders of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro say they have extended the deadline for bids to build their new center, which has been the target of vandalism and a lawsuit trying to stop construction.

Saleh Sbenaty, a member of the mosque planning committee, told The Tennessean that interest in the construction project has been lacking, which could be related to pressure within the community and concern about security at the site.

The mosque is trying to build a bigger place of worship, but arsonists last year torched construction equipment that was being used to prepare the grounds.

Police were also investigating a bomb threat received last week.

Sbenaty said the hope is to find a contractor by the end of September.
