Ex-Knox County Judge Richard Baumgartner disbarred

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Former Knox County Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner has been disbarred by the Tennessee Supreme Court.

The court entered the enforcement order on Wednesday.

Baumgartner consented to being disbarred in an affidavit given to the Board of Professional Responsibility.

The board says Baumgartner could not successfully defend himself against a petition for final discipline.

Baumgartner resigned and pleaded guilty in March to official misconduct for buying drugs from a felon under his jurisdiction.

Knoxville attorney and Baumgartner's friend, Bruce Poston, talked about the decision saying, "I'm sad, that's the price. It's a stiff penalty. I thought suspended was more a possibility, but disbarred, it's sad. I understand from people he is on the road to recovery and looking much better and feeling better."
