Walmart to open in Sweetwater

SWEETWATER (WATE) - City officials met Wednesday and made the announcement that a Walmart Supercenter is opening in Sweetwater. They say the store should be open by Christmas 2012 or early 2013.

"I think it's about time that Sweetwater has a new business coming to the area and hopefully it will bring new jobs for people around here who are out of work," said Melissa Karen Bailey Billingsley, a resident from Sweetwater.

Officials say the store is estimated to bring about 300 new jobs, and they are hoping it will cut down on travel costs for citizens as well.

"I have to go to Madisonville or Athens when I want to go to Walmart for specific things," Sweetwater resident Paulette McDaniel explained.

According to Sweetwater Mayor Doyle Lowe, "Now they'll have an opportunity to spend that money here in Sweetwater and like I said, the research department found a hole in the market and that's why they're coming to Sweetwater. It's a good market."

But how will the other stores in the area be affected? One manager from the United Grocery Outlet told 6 News that they don't think it will be a problem.

"I shop here at this local store, U.G.O, and I just find the cheapest I can get," McDaniels said.

An employee from the Dollar General says they have loyal customers, so once the newness of Walmart wears off, they should be fine.

Either way, it won't be long until Sweetwater finally has a Walmart. Officials say construction is expected to begin the first of the year, weather permitting.
