Dermatology Associates of Knoxville the first in the state of offer a new non-surgical approach to treating skin cancer.

Knoxville, TN. -  Dermatology Associates of Knoxville (DAK)  today announced that they are the first in the state of TN  to acquire the Sensus Healthcare SRT-100TM, a non-invasive skin cancer treatment system. The SRT-100™ will provide the local patient community with the most effective, non-surgical, and pain free therapy to treat Non-Melanoma Basal and Squamous Cell skin cancers, which account for the vast majority of all skin cancers.

" The national skin cancer foundation states that 40 – 50% of people over the age of 65 will develop a form of skin cancer.  With a growing number of patients experiencing non melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), DAK is focused on providing treatment solutions that treat cancer and maintain a great cosmetic outcome. We are very proud to be the first in Tennessee to offer the SRT-100 which gives patients a safe, effective non-surgical approach to treating NMSC" said Dr Drew Miller from DAK.

Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) is a low-energy radiotherapy that goes no deeper than the thickness of the skin.  The radiation targets abnormal cells by disrupting cell division; tumor cells divide more rapidly than normal cells making the tumor an easy target for radiation. Normal cells are able to repair themselves because they are not going through this rapid growth making this form of surface radiation highly effective in treating non melanoma skin cancers and a cosmetically attractive alternative to surgery in selected cancers and patient populations.

"This new form of therapy for treating skin cancer is very easy on the patient.  A patient simply sits or reclines in a chair during the treatment which takes about 90 seconds. Multiple treatments are usually necessary depending on the patient.  Physician would discuss with the patient to determine the best outcome. The skin becomes a bit red like a slight sunburn and then returns to normal in about two weeks after the final treatment. This treatment is especially well suited for patients who are diabetic and cannot have surgery." said Dr. Miller.
