KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A woman died and two others were critically injured Saturday morning in a wreck involving a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles on Interstate 40.

Police say the crash happened at approximately 11:49 a.m. at mile marker 396 between Asheville Highway and Strawberry Plains Pike.

A BMW was driving east on I-40 when it crossed the median and crashed into a Buick driving in oncoming traffic. The BMW then collided with the tractor-trailer.

Police say the driver of the Buick, Mary Sanders, 75, of Tucker, Georgia, was killed.

Her husband, Jerry Sanders, 78, and the BMW driver, Jerry McIver, III, 28, of Taylorsville, North Carolina, were taken to UT Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Harjeet Singh, 31, of Fresno, California, was not injured in the incident.

Traffic was backed up in the westbound lanes, which were closed until approximately 4:45 p.m. Police rerouted drivers through the median to eastbound lanes until that time.
