KNOXVILLE (WATE)- Lady Vols starting point guard Ariel Massengale has been sidelined 2-3 weeks with a dislocated middle finger on her left hand.
"Ariel injured the middle finger on her left hand in practice this afternoon after going for a loose ball," said Lady Vols trainer Jenny Moshak.
"Typically, this type of injury takes between 14-21 days to heal."
The Lady Vols start a massive four-game road trip on Sunday in New York City.
While the extent of Massengale's injury wasn't known immediately after practice, Tennessee players braced for the possibility of playing without her.
"Everybody's going to have to step up, establish new roles, she's a huge part of this team," said teammate Vicki Baugh.
"I think everybody is valuable to our team, nobody really is replaceable, so we're going to have to do the best job," added Taber Spani.
Massengale has started all six games for Tennessee this season. She is averaging 7.2 points per game and 5.8 assists per game.
She was named SEC Freshman of the Week for her play in wins over Texas and Middle Tennessee State.
The Lady Vols will need to adjust quickly.
They play DePaul at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday and then travel to Rutgers for a game on Tuesday.
After that, the Lady Vols will jet across country to play games at UCLA and Stanford.
Their next home game is Dec. 28.
