SPEEDWELL (WATE) - A Claiborne County Marine who was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan is back in the United States.
The first photos of Marine Lance Cpl. Cody Evans, 27, were released by his family this week. He is recovering in a military hospital in Bethesda, MD.
Evans was deployed back in July with the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion out of Knoxville.
His family received the news on December 15 that he had been wounded in an IED explosion. Evans suffered a pelvic fracture and had to have both of his legs amputated around the knee.
Since arriving in Maryland, he has had to undergo several surgeries. This week he was able to get in a wheelchair for the first time.
Evans released this statement on Facebook, "I'm very thankful for all the love, support and prayers from everyone."
They are not sure how long he will be in Maryland before being able to return back home to East Tennessee.
If you would like to send Evans a card or letter, you can mail them to this address: Lance Cpl. Cody Evans, General Delivery, 8901 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20889-5600.
His family is also asking for donations to help in Evans' recovery.
Donations or cards can be sent to Regina and Cody Evans, Attn: Tammy Greene, P.O. Box 3475, Morristown, TN 37815 or monetary donations can be made at any First Century Bank location in the Regina Evans account.
His family has also set up a Facebook page to allow others to follow how Evans is doing in his recovery.
