KNOXVILLE (WATE) - University of Tennessee head men's swimming and diving coach John Trembley was let go Tuesday, the athletic department announced.

UT Athletics Director Dave Hart issued a termination letter to Trembley, dated Tuesday, that said the reason for the firing was gross misconduct.

According to a document received by 6 Sports, gross misconduct can cover a wide range of transgressions including insubordination.

Assistant coach Lars Jorgensen will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Trembley was in his 23rd season as head coach. He's headed the swimming and diving program since 1988.

A 1975 graduate of UT who competed in swimming, Trembley served five years as an assistant for  Tennessee from 1975-79 before becoming head coach at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania from 1980-88.

He led the Vols to Southeastern Conference titles twice and developed a number of swimmers who went on to compete in the Olympics.

Jorgensen, a 1994 graduate and former swimmer at UT, is in his second season with the program. He arrived at UT in August 2010 as an interim assistant before being promoted to a full-time assistant in June 2011.

Before coming to Knoxville, Jorgensen served for six years as the head coach at Toledo and five years as an assistant coach and associate head coach at LSU.
