KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Saturday marked five years since a young Knoxville couple, Channon Christian and Chris Newsom, were carjacked, tortured and murdered.

Their deaths have sparked a string of court cases and controversies that reverberate still.

The families of both victims held memorials at the cemeteries where they were buried.

"I'm feeling sad," said Mary Newsom, the mother of Chris Newsom. "It's a hard day to get through, but I'm glad everyone was out here to show their respect for Chris and that makes me feel good."

"It's just one more opportunity that we can gather a bunch of friends together and remind people in this community what happened to Channon and Chris," said Gary Christian, Channon Christian's father.

Both families say it is hard knowing there is a good possibility the four people convicted in their murders will get a new trial.

"Last time we were in court it opened up all over again," said Newsom. "There is no closure. I feel like our kids are not resting in peace. There is still no justice."

Both families hope people will not forget what wonderful people Channon and Chris were.

"He was always a good friend to everyone," said Newsom. "I'm glad everyone still respects him."

"She was a wonderful, loving person," said Deena Christian, Channon's mother. "She was a great daughter, great friend, great sister. She does this every year. We have a weather challenge. This is her idea to let us know she knows we are here."

A year ago the Christian family formed the Shepherds, a motorcycle club to keep Channon's memory alive. Many of the club's members were at her memorial Saturday.

They are planning a memorial ride in Channon's memory on her birthday on April 29.
