KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Hundreds of volunteers have already worked at the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" site since Tuesday.

They are asked to do a number of tasks. Several volunteers who worked overnight were asked to make sure every hard hat used by a volunteer is cleaned.

They volunteers we spoke with say they didn't mind doing this small assignment.

"That's what I have learned throughout my life. Even the little things can count. All the little things help," said Lee Wells, a volunteer from Harriman. "It makes it easier for the others."

Wells had the overnight shift, which she said she didn't mind working.

"People who know me well will say I never go to bed so this for me is fine," said Wells. "This is not late for me."

Jean Goin also helped clean hard hats. "I love Extreme Makeover," she said. "I watch it every opportunity I get, and it's for a good cause."

Goin works for Green Mountain Coffee, and says she was encouraged by her employer to volunteer.

Besides cleaning hard hats, she was assigned other responsibilities. "I'm checking people in as they come in, the regular volunteers, and giving them wrist bands for food," she said.

Both women say they're excited to be here, no matter what they have to do to help. "It was always in some other place, way far away," said Wells, "Maybe if I ever get a chance, I'll join in if I can."

"Everybody's been excited, very excited," said Goin, "Very willing to help, but that's East Tennessee."

Right now, Extreme Makeover has plenty of non-skilled volunteers. They can always use more skilled volunteers.

Goin's company, Green Mountain Coffee, is providing free coffee for volunteers.
