Keeping the volunteer spirit after Extreme Makeover Knoxville build

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition bus is gone, but that doesn't mean the opportunity to help has come to an end.

There are plenty of opportunities in East Tennessee to help others.

"We're really seeking skilled volunteers on Saturdays to be crew leaders, and some of the workers who volunteered with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition certainly have some experience now, and we would love to have their help," says Habitat for Humanity Communications Director Dan Hurst.

Like Extreme Makeover, Habitat for Humanity also builds homes on a condensed schedule. Homes are completed in just nine weeks.

"On our first Saturday, what we call our blitz Saturday, it goes from having just a floor system to having all the walls up, all the exterior walls and the roof tresses on and the roof decking on, so it's all under cover by the end of that first day," Hurst said.

While some skilled volunteers are required, training is available onsite.

"They could do anything from roofing to siding to framing, really all the things they could have done on the other job site," Hurst explained.

If construction isn't how you'd like to help, the United Way of Greater Knoxville has several opportunities as well.

"If you love children, there are so many options: reading to children, working with children in after-school programs and the like and working with seniors as well," says Marie Alcorn, with United Way.

The organization is working to create more chances for community involvement. "We need to build up the inventory, if you will, of opportunities to serve, to volunteer in the greater Knoxville area," Alcorn said.

Habitat for Humanity also has volunteer opportunities that are not on a build site, including working at the ReStore or in the office.
