KNOXVILLE (WATE) - When actress and activist Jenny McCarthy was in Knoxville for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, she was sporting a piece of safety equipment customized by a local artist.

It was mostly a sea of average hard hats at the Robinson Road site where Extreme Makeover built a new home and other structures for Daniel and Mandy Watson and their non-profit, The Restoration House of East Tennessee.

However, McCarthy's hard hat was covered in colorful decor.

Artist Lisa Palmer said she volunteered online for Extreme Makeover in hopes of doing a mural in the Watson family's home, but she was delighted to use her skills for any part of the project.

"I painted Jenny's hard hat with swirlies," Lisa said. "I got information about what they wanted and then made it fit on the hat."

Lisa was tapped almost last minute to jazz up McCarthy's hard hat. "They called me Saturday and said they needed a hard hat by Monday so I went and picked it up."

At first, Lisa didn't know who the hard hat was for. "It was exciting. It was very exciting. They told me it was for a secret celebrity, but then they told me to put Jenny on it."

By Monday, McCarthy was wearing the hat proudly and Lisa had a big smile for playing a small part in such a big project.

"This whole thing is fun, to have this many people from my city getting involved," Lisa said. "It's more than show excitement. "It's changing lives excitement."

When Made in Tennessee spoke with Lisa she had seen McCarthy wearing her creation, but had not gotten to meet her.
