SEYMOUR (WATE) - Seymour resident and Republican activist Scott Hughes says Wednesday he will run for the newly-drawn District 2 Tennessee Senate seat.

It's currently held by Maryville attorney Doug Overbey, who's also a Republican.

The recently reconfigured and renumbered district includes all of Blount and most of Sevier County.

Hughes currently serves as chief financial officer for his family's church, Fuse Church.

In 2010, Hughes ran for the District 8 Tennessee House seat and has more than 10 years experience working in the pro-life movement.

Most recently, he served as executive director for the Hope Resource Center, East Tennessee's largest crisis pregnancy center.

The public is invited to a casual meet-and-greet reception Monday, February 13 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Sevierville Civic Center.

Hughes' campaign will host a similar event on Thursday, February 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Everett Senior Center in Maryville.

Tennessee Republican National Committeewoman Peggy Lambert will serve as campaign chairman. Former state Rep. Clifford "Bo" Henry will be the treasurer. Former Blount County Young Republican Chairman Ted Boyatt will be the campaign manager.

Scott has been married to his wife, Rachel, for 14 years. They have four children: Tyler, Ansley, Blake and Gavin.
