GATLINBURG (WATE) - In 2010, moonshine was finally legalized in the state of Tennessee. Since that time a few businesses have started producing and selling it.
One of those was Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine and Distillery in Gatlinburg.
Business has been so good they are expanding. "It's actually tripled since we opened . . . far as the production end," said Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine distiller Eric Vance.
Vance say right now they are barely meeting demand with the moonshine they are producing.
Owners of the company have already purchased property in Gatlinburg to build another distillery. Construction on it should start in the next few weeks. "(It) secures jobs for us, and a lot of other people," said Vance.
Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine is already being distributed in 30 states, and by the end of the year they plan to be in all 50. The company has already hired 60 employees.
Moonshine is not the only product being sold. "We also have a gift shop full of food made with moonshine in it, T-shirts, sweatshirts, shot glasses, you name it we got it here at Ole Smoky's," said employee Meghan Timmer.
The owners of Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine have also purchased another building in Gatlinburg for another business venture. They are not saying much about it right now, but say it will be completely different than their current location.
They are just glad the demand for moonshine is strong, and encourage anyone to come by for a free sample.
