NEWPORT (WATE) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation on Wednesday awarded an emergency contract to remove debris and unstable rock from Interstate 40 at the site of Tuesday's rockslide.

The westbound lanes of the interstate are currently closed in Cocke County at mile marker 451.

Motorists traveling through the area must currently take a 55-mile detour.

The contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, Phillips and Jordan, Inc., for $59,350.

The contractor expects to begin work Thursday afternoon.

TDOT hopes to reopen the interstate by Monday, February 6.
