MOSHEIM (WATE) - A 5-year-old Greene County boy is credited with saving his family after a fire broke out at their home.
Jayden McFarland woke up to flames in his bedroom Saturday morning. What he did next makes him nothing short of a hero.
"I hear a rooster, and I waked up and a fire started then," said Jayden McFarland. "I looked for Nana and she not there. Then I went back up stairs and a big fire."
When Jayden saw the fire he immediately went to the next room to wake his father.
"(I) got him out of the house with my younger brother and started fighting the fire with two fire extinguishers," said Jayden's father Michael McFarland.
Michael is a volunteer firefighter with the Orebank Volunteer Fire Department. He says if his son had not alerted them they all could have died. "I'm very proud." he said.
Fire investigators determined the fire was started by an electric antique lamp that was in Jayden's room.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire in one room, but smoke caused damage through out the house. There was insurance on the home, so the damage should be fixed in the next couple of weeks.
The power had to be turned off at the home, so for now the family is staying with relatives in the area.
